General Discussion / New Digital Modes
« on: July 18, 2013, 10:00:57 PM »
I've been trying to gather more information on the new digital mode (C4FM) available on the Yaesu FT1DR and the upcoming FTM-400DR.  Taking a look at their brochure it appears that this isn't compatible with P25 used for the public service sector.  The spec sheet for the FT1DR handhelds explain how they implemented this new mode but quite a few folks are voicing their dis-satisfaction about their decision here.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the information Janice.  I've linked this posting to the calendar so people can quickly bring up the posting.  Good luck!

Test Equipment / Re: Accuracy, Resolution & Repeatability
« on: July 18, 2013, 09:45:27 PM »
Yes, it was for a DMM.  Thanks for the detailed explanation as I wasn't sure how the Counts spec factored in.  By providing me an example of how this translates into real world values I understand this much better now.

Is there any spec that covers the repeatability component that you refer to?

Great explaination of the topic.  I'd be interested in know how to convert the various accuracy spec's I see for various pieces of test equipment -- for instance:

Is this considered 'It's good enough for ham radio?"

If you are wondering what this little unit looks like, check out this link to an article written in
1989, in pdf format:
It would go great with an HT for 1200 baud packet.

So, if you have an HK-21 manual, or know where I can find one online for free, let me know.

Very cool to read the article.  It seems as though I had one of these but I can't find it if I did.  It appears that you can just use a serial terminal program to communicate with it but obviously it would be nice to get a copy of the manual.  My searches didn't result in finding a copy either.

That sounds like a good idea Tom.  Perhaps we can get Nathan to do the presentation as he uses APRS.

Dayton Hamvention / Re: No Hamvention stories or pics ??

I had a good time and enjoyed the fairly decent weather this year.  Saturday morning the buildings got a bit crowded when it was raining but otherwise it wasn't to bad.

I picked up a few odds and ends and a LED 4x4x4 cube powered by an Arduino compatible controller called the Rainbowduino.  I haven't built it yet but I'll post pictures when I do.

I also picked up a tabletop gaming console that runs 60 arcade games from the 80's.  My favorite game was Galaga.
