Special Event Station 2018

from: https://kc9hyy.wordpress.com/hmhs-britannic/

**For Public Dissemination**

On November 21, 1916, The HMHS Britannic was traveling in the Kea Channel off the Greek island of Kea when it struck an underwater mine. 55 minutes after the explosion, the Britannic sank, claiming the lives of 30 of the 1065 souls on board. The Britannic was the largest ship to lost in World War One.

The Britannic was owned by the White Star Line, and was a sister ship of the Olympic, and Titanic. Unlike the Titanic, Britannic’s design had 6 bulkheads which extended to B Deck to would prevent flooding in the instance of a breach of the hull. Britannic also had adequate lifeboats installed along with a double hull alongside the engine and boiler rooms.

The Britannic was originally purposed for trans-atlantic travel, however shortly after completion, was requisitioned for use in World War One as a hospital ship. The Britannic was retrofitted in order to accompany of capacity of 3309 wounded individuals.

To this day, the Britannic lies in 400 feet of water. Any divers wishing to explore the wreck must receive permission first from the British and Greek Governments due to the Britannic being listed as a British war grave.
