General Discussion / Good power inverters?
« on: August 31, 2013, 06:13:00 AM »
I have been tasked to put together a list of items needed to make 120V or 240V from 12V vehicle system. I  getting a new service truck at my work and some in management think we need to put a 10kw generator in it so I can run a welder. I don't think we need that much and would rather run a power inverter because I would only need a welder a handful of times in a year.

So I am looking for first hand experiences with power inverters of 3000W and above. I know I can find them online but I would rather talk to someone that has actually used them. Thoughts on reliability and longevity. In daily use, I would normally be under 1000W of demand but I would need capability of 5kw at least.

How much does the tried bander  weigh?

It is a former 620wtmj van. It has an on board generator but it isn't hooked up right now. I use a compressed air tank to lift the mass. I am unsure about the mast capacity but I don't think any beam would be too heavy for it. Whatever you guys would like is fine by me. Just trying to make life easy if you want it.

Tom, I brought up that I would be willing to loan my van with air mast if you wanted to setup a beam antenna. You can turn the mast by hand but a rotor would make life easier. You climb on top of the van from a ladder on the rear door. There is a platform on top of the van that would support two people placing the antenna on a waist/chest high mast.

The mast can be up in a matter of minutes. Only two people would even be needed to install and operate it. It would seem to make more sense than putting up a tilt tower considering the time and man power needed.

Let me know what you would like. I hope to come out and operate but I'm unsure how my schedule is right now.

I feel bad to miss this program. I hope it will get done again in the future. Would the powerpoint part of the presentation stand on its own or would he dialog be needed to make the presentation complete. Did anyone record it?

Questions / Proprogation of 10 meters
« on: April 09, 2013, 09:55:50 PM »
My question is about 10 meters vs 11 meters (CB). Since I am fresh General license holder, I am still getting used to how the different bands work. I know a 10 meter net is held on Friday nights that is local guys but when I last used 10 meters, I talked to someone in Poland at 4700 miles away. So I question how well I can talk locally on 10 meters.

The flip side of this is the use of a CB. I realize they only use 4W of power but I have never talked more than a few miles with it. So how does 10 Meters go around the world but 11 Meters only go local. It can't be just a case of power. Is it the quality of receiver?

How can two frequencies being only a Mhz or 2 apart carry so different?
