I just bought and received a pair of these. I'll never use them outdoors, but I wired one up and it looks awesome in my Shack/Man Cave!

General Discussion / Lighthouse Article
« on: November 26, 2014, 09:21:25 AM »
This is a story from a few weeks ago in the News-Graphic Newspaper (Ozaukee County)

They did a story on our event there back in August '14, but this is a general story on the lighthouse building and history.

Enjoy!

General Discussion / Re: Construction imagery
« on: October 07, 2014, 09:36:08 PM »
Thanks Brian.

The drone was my DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus, the time lapse of the concrete was two Gopro 3 cameras, and the star time lapse was a Canon 5D3 and a Canon 50D. The longer star scene was made from ~2000 full frame, 20 megapixel images. 40 gigabytes of data.

I mentioned that I was shooting using various techniques the construction of the new St Francis Borgia school just north of 5 corners. Some cool drone, time lapse and night photography.

Thanks Gary, now it makes sense.

Brian can provide a link if he wants. I hope to do more at a future event, when I am less sleep deprived....

Big Dipper was split in half by the tower at mid height. The little would have been off to the right, but I think it was behind the tree.

I wasn't shooting recently during the storms. Last few times I tried, the rain hit before the lightning was close enough to capture. This diffuses the bolts into a general flash.

Here is a cool cloud lapse from about a year ago.

I shot a night sequence and a couple daylight ones. Also a field on the way home when the clouds were too interesting to ignore. Watch the big dipper behind the tower in the night scene.

Roughly 2000 full sized RAW stills from a full frame DSLR combined into a 24 frames/Sec video.

Hope you like it.

General Discussion / Re: 440 band QRM
« on: March 23, 2014, 06:20:20 PM »
Try setting your VFO to the output frequency of our 440 repeater, with no PL squelching. Drive around town. It's bad....

You can clearly hear audio, voices and music, not HAM, its broadcast style TV audio.

I haven't noticed much on 2m.

Now that you mention it, I think I have the PLs only on the transmit side. (slapping forehead)

Try VFO to the 440 repeater out frequency (no RX PL) and drive a bit. You will notice it for sure right where Sheboygan RD hits Washington ave downtown Cedarburg.

Does anyone else notice a lot of interference when driving on the 440 band? It's almost to the point where I want to lock out these frequencies from the scan list on my mobile. It seems to be in the same spots in Cedarburg, Grafton and near my work in Glendale.

I see it around 443 MHz and 444MHz.

It actually sounds like broadcast, could it be cable TV leaking out?

Anyone else?

General Discussion / Site for determining Elevation
« on: March 18, 2014, 09:23:10 PM »
I found this site, it uses google map data to give what appears to be precise elevation data based on map clicks.

You simply navigate to a spot, click and it tells you the ground elevation down to sub foot level. Look just below the map for the red words. It even works in lake Michigan.

It shows our repeater site at 927ft ASL, and my home about 100ft below that.
